Cricket – Adam Gilchrist “Demolition Man” Signed Lithograph
Since his Test debut in 1999, Adam Gilchrist has driven opposition bowlers to despair: over-pitch and get driven to the boundary, pitch short and get pulled or cut over the boundary, hit a good length, and more than likely you’ll receive the same treatment. His devastating hitting is built on simple, sure strokes and being unafraid to play crossbatted shots. His approach at times appears as uncomplicated and carefree as cricket in the backyard. Long a force in one day cricket where he shares an Australian record with Allan Border of the fastest century from balls faced (78); in just his second Test match his whirlwind batting (149no from 163 balls) helped Australia haul in the 3rd largest target in Test history to defeat Pakistan at Hobart. In his first Ashes Test, he blazed 152 from 143 balls and on the way set a new record for most runs in an Ashes over, 22.
However, his tour to South Africa in 2002 reinforced captain Steve Waugh’s opinion that Adam Gilchrist was a ‘once-in-a-generation’ player. A then world record 204no from 213 balls at Johannesburg, and then 138no from 108 at Cape Town, followed up by 91 from 107 at Durban was an astonishing sequence of big-hitting. At the end of the tour his Test average stood neatly at 60 with his performances earning him ‘Player of the Series’ accolades and firmly establishing AC Gilchrist as the Demolition Man of world cricket.
All photographs have been selected from two of Adam Gilchrist’s most thrilling Test match innings – his 152 runs from 143 balls at Birmingham and his 204 not out from 213 in Johannesburg. Superb sports photography captures him punishing the attack – driving, pulling and acknowledging the rapturous crowds.
