Cricket – Ian Chappell ‘The Great Captains’ Signed Lithograph

‘A belligerent approach to the opposition…’
Australia went for the longest Test-winning drought in history, then along came Ian Chappell. Known for getting the best out of his players and a belligerent approach to the opposition, he turned Australia’s cricket team into a formidable fighting force in the ’70’s.
As captain, Ian Chappell is the first to admit he was blessed with a surplus of talent during his reign. Under a lesser captain, the Australian team of the early 70’s would probably have been regarded as a very good team. Under the leadership of Ian Chappell it has come to be regarded as a truly great side.
As a batsman, he was tough and resilient year in, year out, at the perilous Number 3 position, where only the very reliable survive.
He played 71 Tests in a row from 1965 to 1975/’76, before being instrumental in the formation of World Series Cricket as captain of the Australian team. He returned to traditional Tests in 1979/’80 and averaged 50.67 in Australia’s series defeat of England, 3 – 0. He then retired permanently from all cricket.
His statistical record as captain with 15 wins, and 5 losses from 30 Tests, is one of the best. In 76 matches he averaged 42.42 with the bat, mostly in the risky first-drop position. At first slip he was one of the games best catchers, with quick and reliable hands, taking 105 catches.
In the large photograph Captain Ian Chappell introduces his team to the Queen prior to the start of play at Lords – 2nd Test, England Vs Australia, June 22, 1972.  Greg Chappell and Rod Marsh wait in line.
