If there was a single innings that showcased the extent of Steve Waugh’s character, determination and talent, his knock against South Africa in the Super Six stage of the 1999 Cricket World Cup is a certain contender. Requiring a win to advance to the semi-finals of the prestigious tournament, Australia were in deep in trouble. Set a hefty total of 272 for victory by the Proteas, the Aussies had lost Adam Gilchrist, Mark Waugh and Damien Martyn cheaply, slumping to 3/48 before their captain strode out in the 12th over to join Ricky Ponting in the middle.
Of course this innings is also famous for Steve Waugh’s battle with South Africa’s Herschelle Gibbs. Bizarrely, Gibbs’ habit of celebration before he had complete control over the ball had been discussed at a team meeting. Now into folklore entered Steve’s utterance that reaffirmed his tenacity, gamesmanship and absolute desire to score these runs…. ‘What does it feel like to drop the World Cup?”
