After 16 seasons, after 355 games, who would have predicted that the final one would be so euphoric, so memorable, so… perfect? Perhaps the footy gods knew that, if anyone deserved a perfect farewell, it was Geelong’s fearless leader. He started the way leaders start – a season-high 12 touches in an utterly dominant first quarter, unsurpassed by anyone teammate or opponent. From there, the game felt a foregone conclusion, but maybe one that would need one more special moment to make it one to remember… and, as he has so many times, Joel delivered. In the form of a running, 45-metre, banana. The way his teammates flocked to him was somewhat about the moment, but mostly about the man. So we say farewell, Joel – but farewell in the most perfect of ways. From a NAB Rising Star, to a young triple Premiership player, to the responsibility of captaincy in which you continued to reset the benchmark for all who follow… and, ultimately, a Premiership captain.
