Steven Gerrard was the Captain of the Liverpool Football Club and will ultimately go down as one the of the greatest players in the clubs history. The 2005 UEFA Champions League Final was contested between Liverpool of England and AC Milan of Italy at the Atatürk Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey on 25 May 2005. Liverpool, who had won the competition four times, were appearing in their sixth final, and their first since 1985. AC Milan, who had won the competition six times, were appearing in their second final in three years and tenth overall.
Milan were regarded as favourites and their team included many players who had experienced success in the competition. Liverpool had been considered underdogs throughout the competition, but had beaten more favoured opposition, including Juventus and Chelsea, to reach the final.
3-0 down at half time and some never give up attitude from the Liverpool faithful sparked a fantastic rendition of the clubs “You’ll Never Walk Alone” sung during the half time interval so loudly and proudly it produced an inspiring comeback for Liverpool as within a 6 minute period shortly after half time the game was 3-3, eventually being taken out by Liverpool on penalties (3-2). This final was one of the greatest half time comebacks and will go down in history as one of the best Champions League Finals ever.
Praise for Liverpool’s efforts came from outside England, including Argentine Legend Diego Maradona, who said, “Even the Brazil team that won the 1970 World Cup could not have staged a comeback with Milan leading 3–0…The English club proved that miracles really do exist. I’ve now made Liverpool my English team”.
