South Sydney Rabbitohs – History In The Making Limited Edition Print – Signed John Sattler
Winners of 20 premiership titles, the South Sydney Rabbitohs are the “The Pride of the League”.
The third club formed in 1908, Souths were a competitive force from the outset, winning the first two premierships before embarking on their first golden era.
By 1925, Souths were the most dominant team in the competition winning six of the next seven titles. But as the stars drifted away or retired, the Rabbitohs came back to the field. By the 1940s they dropped to last in the league. In a desolate period, they won just one game in 1945 and none in ’46.
However, the arrival of a new crop of prodigiously talented players lifted them back into premiership contention early in the post-war period. Souths won five titles in six seasons from 1950 to 1955, the last of them in extraordinary circumstances. Second last at the halfway mark, Souths stormed home with 11 consecutive wins to claim the premiership.
Their run of success was halted by the rise of St George in 1956 but when the Dragons’ era ended in 1967, it was Souths who again assumed top spot, winning titles in 1967, 1968, 1970 and 1971.
Again, tough times followed. A financial crisis forced Souths Leagues Club to close for a period in 1973 before supporters rallied to the cause. The ensuing years produced moderate results until hopes were raised by a minor premiership title in 1989. But the slide over the next decade was dramatic. By 1999 Souths were banished from the competition, a victim of the Super League war and the push to rationalise the number of teams in Sydney.
Fans rallied as never before, one inner-city march against the club’s exclusion drew tens of thousands of supporters. Eventually, people-power won out, Souths were re-admitted in 2002 and the battle to restore the club’s fortunes began. The club took significant steps towards that aim in 2006 when actor Russell Crowe and businessman Peter Holmes a Court acquired a majority share in the club. Players were suddenly eager to sign up and in 2007, the Rabbitohs qualified for the finals for the first time since 1989.
To acknowledge the history of the South Sydney Rabbitohs and commemorate their role in making Rugby League the great game that it is, The Centenary of Rugby League is proud to release this stunning product titled ‘History in The Making’.
