Picked up by St. Kilda in the 2000 Rookie Draft, it is fair to say that more than 13 years later, no one expected a small forward name Stephen Milne to end his career as a two-time All-Australian, four-time club leading goal kicker and fourth on the St. Kilda all time leading goal kickers list, bettered only by Tony Lockett, Bill Mohr and Stewart Loewe. Milne has been consistently suggested to be one of the finest small forwards to ever play the game, with only Leigh Matthews and Kevin Bartlett having scored more goals in a non-key position. Perhaps most importantly, Milne retires from football as a one-club player, a testament to his loyalty to the red, white and black, and in the ever-changing nature of football, it is highly unlikely that we will see a player of such unique talents for some time.
