Matthew Hayden Signed Limited Edition Imposing Force Print
Australia’s most successful opening batsman had few peers in world cricket.
Many a time he successfully brutalised the opposition and at his peak he could do so at will at both Test level and in one day internationals.
His attacking style was positively fearsome to those in his sights and that – along with his physical presence and mental resolve – saw him become one of the most feared players in Australia’s all conquering teams of the ‘90s and at the turn of the century.
Together with his long-serving top-of-the-order Test partner Justin Langer, Matthew Hayden set a new benchmark at the start of an innings, dominating attacks of all persuasions.
His individual accolades included being named Test Player of the Year, Wisden Cricketer of the Year, International Cricket Council One-Day Player of the Year and One-Day International Player of the Year.
Haydos played in 103 Test matches and 161 one day internationals in a career that spanned 15 years. His introduction to ODIs was against England at Manchester in May 1993 and he faced South Africa in Johannesburg in his first Test match in March 1994.
He scored 8,625 Test runs at an average of 50.73 and that included thirty centuries and 29 half centuries, with a highest score of a then world record 380 against Zimbabwe in Perth in October 2003.
The left-handed Queenslander was the first batsman to snare more than 1000 runs in five successive calendar years – 2001-2005.
Hayden accumulated 6,133 runs in the 50 overs a side international matches, with an average of 43.80 and a strike rate of 78.96. Among his most memorable knocks was an unbeaten Australian record 181 off 166 balls – which included 10 sixes – in the final match of the 2006-07 Chappell-Hadlee series.
With his retirement in January 2009, he takes his rightful place as one of the greatest players to have worn the baggy green.
